August 10th, Friday – Grand Canyon of PA; Duncan Tavern for Supper

No reason for an early rise this morning so we just took our time getting up.  A bit of surprise to find the temperature in the low 60’s which put a chill in the air.  Don’t get me wrong it felt really good.  Add to that the fact that the humidity seems to have broken.  All in all a nice start to the day.

Our morning was an easy one.  Breakfast was my favorite which is cheese potatoes plus something new, some really nice pieces of cantaloupe.  Add to it to a glass of orange juice and a couple of cups of coffee.  Taken together absolutely delicious and tummy filling.  Barbara had her usual  breakfast staple, yup, you guessed it, oatmeal with chocolate chips!

The rest of the morning I spent reading a magazine I just received.  I like to go through them immediately.  I then make a note of an article, product, campground or whatever that interests me and then I toss the magazine.  Can’t afford to clutter Graybeard up with past issues of magazines read.  After that I turned to a mystery novel that I started the other day.  Even though I was able to get through a couple of chapters I still have a way to go.

Barbara, on the other hand, spent the morning taking care of odds and ends in the kitchen.  Clean up from last night.  Putting dishes away.  And in general just straightening things up all around.

By now it was time to move out.  We were going over to my sisters for the rest of the day.  She has opened up her house, and even better her shower to us so that we don’t have to worry about filling up the gray tank in Graybeard.  Ah, a nice hot shower and no need to worry about filling up the gray tank.  Fantastic!

All cleaned up and spiffy, the four of us headed out to do some sightseeing.  Our stop today?  The Little Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania which was on Barbara’s bucket list of things to see.The 47-mile-long, 1,000-foot-deep Gorge winds its way through a vast wilderness landscape of breathtaking beauty. The Canyon is surrounded by 165,000 acres of Pennsylvania State forestland, leaving an unspoiled view

as far as the eye can see. Two State Parks offer stunning views of the Canyon and hiking trails from which one can descend into the Canyon or discover secluded overlooks along the Canyon rim. The area is so gorgeous and pristine that the 12-mile section near Wellsboro was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968.

Leonard Harrison State Park and Colton Point State Park perch on opposite sides of the canyon. Both parks offer hiking trails and camping facilities. We chose to go to the lookout at Colton Point State Park.  The 368-acre Colton Point State Park resonates with the rustic charm of the Civilian Conservation Corps era of the 1930s. The rugged overlooks offer great views of the canyon. The Colton Point Park side also offers hiking trails. The Turkey Path into the Canyon from Colton Point is 1.5 miles down and passes a 70-foot waterfall.   Here we are at the overlook.

Mission accomplished we headed back to my sister’s house before heading out again for supper.  They have a favorite tavern they often go to called the Duncan Tavern.  The tavern is in the former coal mining town of Antrim, PA.  Here’s a little history.

Duncan Tavern Supper

Supper was delicious and this is definitely a place I would return to in the future.  Lucky me, I was able to bring some of supper home for lunch tomorrow, just too much to eat at one time.

That was our day.  Perfect in all ways especially since we once again were able to spend time with my sister and her husband.  Cindy joked later in the evening when we were sitting and sharing “We’ve probably seen more of each other in the last month or so than we have in 10 years!”  Trust me, neither of us is complaining.  It’s great.

Thanks again for joining us for the day.  Hopefully, your day was just as great.  As I leave you for the night, I leave you with this to ponder:

As always,  if you are coming to the end of your day with concerns and worries, let me suggest that you turn them over to God.  After all, He is going to be up all night so why not let him handle them for you.

Time now for our evening prayers and eventually some shut-eye.  Till tomorrow.

These are the voyages of  Graybeard and it’s occupants, four paws and two humans.  Our continuing mission: to explore as many new states as possible, to seek out new acquaintances and make new friends, to boldly go where we have not been before
