July 25th, Wednesday – A Pause for Furniture Construction

12 straight hours of rain.  No let up whatever.  The ground is soaked and soggy and I wonder how much more it can absorb.  We almost had another stuck RV this afternoon but thankfully I was able to get to him and share with him what happened in the field yesterday.  In the end, we did find a way to get his trailer backed in to his spot without any issues.  All’s well that ends well.

No real blog tonight since I’m in the midst of putting furniture together.  We got the call that the table and chairs were in.  They were nice enough to bring them over. A bit too big to put into Little Graybeard.  But they are here and now it is time to assemble them.

So this time I decided to really read the instructions before I got started.  Here we go.

OK, time now to get back to the table.  It sure isn’t going to put itself together so I need to get to it.  Let you know tomorrow what the whole set looks like.  We also have our slip covers and they look nice.  Slowly things are beginning to come together.

So for tonight I’ll say goodnight.  And I’ll leave you with this thought to ponder:

As always,  if you are coming to the end of your day with concerns and worries, let me suggest that you turn them over to God.  After all, He is going to be up all night so why not let him handle them for you.

Time now for our evening prayers and eventually some shut-eye.  Till tomorrow.

July 24th, Tuesday – Seneca Falls Visitors Center, Part One; Coming Home to One Stuck RV – No Not Ours!

Rain, even more rain, and more rain after that.  This is really getting old.  And the weather report for the next two weeks calls for a 60% chance of rain or better each day.  What is going on?  I guess we can’t complain since this is really the worse bout of weather we’ve had since leaving Florida.  Rather this, though,  then trying to survive temperatures of over 100 degrees.  I can’t even wrap my head around that high a temperature inside Graybeard.  Sure we have AC but it is for darn certain it is not designed for temperatures like that.

Well, anyway, we decided today that no matter what the weather, we were going to go sightseeing.  So first another delicious breakfast, for me, it was an egg sandwich on an onion role with juice and coffee.  Following that we ran between the rain drops to the car and were off.

Within 30 minutes we were there, the Seneca Falls Visitor Center.

Oh yes, it was raining,   But the good news was we found parking right across the street.

seneca museum rain a plenty

This was another fascinating museum, well laid out, and it has a number of interesting exhibits with ample documentation.  Let’s begin with the history of Seneca Falls.  It was founded as a private company in 1795 it was originally known as Mynderis Mills and flourished as an Industrial village.  In 1815, it was renamed Seneca Falls and in 1836, after 36 years as a private village, it was publicly incorporated.  In 1841, the railroad cut through the middle of town and by 1848 the town was booming.

By 1840, canals had been pushed as far as economically possible.  Starting in 1841, all eyes were on the railroad.  The longest railroad was completed in 1841 and ran through the center of Seneca Falls.  The line was the only rail route to the Mid-West until 1852.  All the U.S. mail, as did all the immigrants, that were streaming West-Ward went through Seneca Falls.

In 1790, the Genesse road was pushed through Seneca Falls along what today is Fall Street to speed settlement of the western part of the state.  The road was turned over to the Seneca Turnpike Company in 1800.  It was widened to 99 feet.  Traffic westward was immense.

We were also interested in the history of the canal that still is present in Seneca Falls and allowed water passage between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake and the original Erie Canal.

Harnessing the river meant harnessing its water power for new mills, a distillery, sawmills, etc between 1795 to 1809.

It also meant building a canal between Seneca and Cayuga Lake with locks that would lower and raise boats a total of 42 feet.

The Seneca- Cayuga first connected to the Erie Canal in 1826 and was rebuilt at that time to the standards of the Erie Canal.

At that time, packet boats carried passengers and were in competition with stagecoaches

Of course, the original canal has undergone several major renovations over the years.  In 1911 plans were underway for a new canal through Seneca Falls known as the Erie Barge Canal.

The two larger locks that would be built would require a dependable source of stored water.  Engineers created a reservoir known as Van Cleef Lake by flooding the low-lying area of the Village known as the flats.

Before the flats were flooded many homes were moved to higher ground.

This is a picture of the new locks when they were under construction.

Today the canal, using a series of locks, allows boats to pass up the Seneca River (follow the blue line from Lake Cayuga) through Oswego out to Lake Ontario.

We also learned a bit more of what life was like on a typical packet boat.  First, we discovered this mural of a full size packet boat painted on one wall.

Then there was an explanation and display of a typical packet boat.

This was a display showing the inside of a typical packet boat.

We next discovered a display that portrayed the typical family life on the canal.

We learned a bit about the captain’s family.

Enough for today, we’ll continue tomorrow with more of Seneca Falls.  But before we leave the museum, a bit of humor if you will.  The story of the bridge tender who not once, but twice ambled off to the local watering hole leaving his post with his railroad bridge open.  Yup, you guessed it, the train chug- chugged off the end of the bridge.  Not once, but twice.  What’s even more humorous is that the train and the engineer in both cases were the same!  The story goes though the bridge tender was not fired the first time, the second time he just took off and was never seen from again!

Visit finished, we ambled off in the rain in search of  The Downtown Deli that had a 5 star rating.

Here are just some of the delicious sandwiches that were being offered.

Here is Barbara enjoying her lunch.  Mine was just as great and we both ate every bite.

Lunch finished, we headed for home, with a quick stop, of course, for some ice cream – always room for that.

Arriving home up the hill to our sight and guess what greeted us?  A tow truck.  Seems the RVer two sites down from us sort of overshot his site and ended up in the field beyond.  Once you are back there, there is only one way to get back where he belonged in his site.  A nice 45 foot tag axle RV at that.

So our day has now ended.  It is still raining off and on.  Forecast for tonight and tomorrow is more of the same.  It is what it is.  We have packages coming.  We have phone appointments to keep.  So we’ll be staying in.

Thanks, once again, for joining us as we traveled through our day.  We had a great time traveling as always, side by side, singing our song.  Now here is a thought for each of us to ponder:

July 23rd, Monday – And The Rains Came Down and the Floods Went Up; Playing In The Rain

Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Again Another – Month!  OK, everything up here is as dry as a bone and rain is sorely needed.  But does it have to come all at once?  Rain last night, rain

off and on all day long.  It got heavy at times, other times just a steady drizzle.  It was mid afternoon that I went out and I looked under Graybeard and wondered Am I going to need to put it up on a pontoon boat?  Thankfully, the soil is porous and dry so the ground soaked it all up in record time.  Just in time for more rain!

Hey, we’ve got TV!  I took a walk today and looked at the other rigs in the park that had their TV antenna’s up.  I then looked carefully at the direction they were all pointing.  Ah, now I have an idea where the tower is.  Back home I turned our antenna in the same

direction, re-scanned for channels and bingo!  We now have the important channels.  Can you guess which ones?  Yup, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.   We also found a bonus channel later in the evening which was American Ninja Warriors.  By the way, I also found a program called antenna point that I installed on both my computer and phone.  You put in a zip code and it tells you where the TV towers are so that you know where to point your TV antenna.  Life is good.

Then I got a bit silly.  Since it was calling for rain for the rest of the week I wanted to get the patio awning out.  It allows us to leave the entrance door open so we can get some air through the screen door.  It also makes it easier to walk Marti – open the door, let him out under the awning and that’s that.

Ah, but it was raining, not hard just a steady drizzle.  Of course, the ground was also soaking wet.  Why do I mention this?  Because to stake down the patio awning you first need to get the jacks down on Graybeard so it is stable.  Which means you need to get the jack pads under the jacks.  Which means getting down and dirty on the ground.  OK, didn’t mind that a bit.  But then came the fun.

Once that was all done, now it was time to roll out the patio awning.  Time after time in

the past it came out with no problem.  Guess what jammed this time?  You got to love it and just learn to laugh.  So in the rain, out came the step ladder, up the ladder, rap the bar in just the right place – of course I know where that it is from past issues – and one, two, three it rolled right out.  It is what it is.

While I was messing with all of this Barbara was inside taking care of my dietary needs.  From breakfast to supper I was well fed with one delicious meal after another.  She is the best.  Barbara also got all our financial records up to date and reconciled.  As of now we are in good shape financially and good to go for the rest of the year and on into next year.  It’s a good feeling to say the least.

That was our day.  Glad to share it with you.  Would also be very happy to give you some of the rain that we are getting.  Thankfully, Graybeard has been keeping us dry as could be.  We have a great rig, built at a time when they still took pride in the work they did.  We hope you had a great day as well.  We cannot control the circumstances of each day, but we can control how we approach and deal with what comes our way.  So make the most of whatever is thrown at you.  Finally, in closing a thought for each of:

July 22nd, Sunday – Home Is Where We Park It, Sned-Acres Family Campground

The forecast was for rain, but we were ready.  The rain did, indeed, come during the middle of the night.  It poured, and it poured for hours.  But then by 8 am it was over and the sun was out.  I just love it when on a moving day they get the weather forecast all wrong.

Up and at it but there was no rush since our new home was but an hour away – well sort of.  More about that in a minute.  We didn’t want to drag the coffee pot and the rest of the kitchen back out so McDonalds it was for breakfast.

Breakfast finished, now it was time to play name that route.  Route A would take us about 2 hours.  Route B would take us about 90 minutes.  Route C would take us less than 60 minutes.  You’re right a no brainer.  Route C it would be.  A straight shot down State Route 89 to our new home.  Breakfast finished and we were on the road.

The route was an easy one.  Simple two-lane road in fair condition with no hidden surprises.  At one point it ran along the shore of Cayuga Lake, wow, was that lake in a turmoil what with the wind and the way it was blowing.

Soon enough we were at our new home which was Sned-Acres Family Campground.

Sned-Acres Family Campground

This campground like so many we’ve been at is really a seasonal park with a few spots for transients like us.  I can understand that this is probably the only way a campground owner can make ends meet, but it worries me.  What happens when parks decide to no longer provide spots for folks like us.  Time will tell as we travel along from state to state and place to place.

We stopped at the office to register but wait, there was no one around.  No problem I had already called and they had given us our site number, #85.  So, I unhooked Little Graybeard and went in search of our new home.  I had no problem finding it at all.  So back to get Graybeard.  By the time I returned to the office it was open so we were able to register.

Onward.  At the site I pulled in and started to hook up.  But it just didn’t feel right.  All the utilities where miles away from where they needed to be.  The sun would end up all day on the side with the refrigerator in it.  What to do?  Simple.  Do a Lubec!  Come in the wrong way and run everything under Graybeard to the pedestal post and the sewer hookup.  This proved to be the right decision.  I no longer needed two sewer extensions just the regular hose.  Electric was easy as well.  Water I needed an extra 4 feet of hose.

home is where we park it better

An added benefit at least for the time being is we can sit and look out the door at the pond rather than a row of other RV’s.   Anyone comes to take a sight next to us I’ll just shoo them away – only kidding.  For the time being the view is absolutely beautiful.

our pond

Here are some other pictures of those around us.  They get the shade, poo.

Well, that was our day.  An easy one by all standards.  Our new home is great.   We’ve settled in and gotten comfortable.  Time to do some sightseeing.  There will be furniture to assemble in the coming days.  Regular maintenance that needs to be done.  Time also to get up on the roof and inspect all the seams.  Life goes on.

Thanks again for joining us on our journey to our new home.  Once again we traveled through the day our way, hand in hand, singing our song.  We hope you also had a great day.  Each day is so precious, none can be repeated so always remember to make the most of each one that you are given.  In closing here is a thought for each of us to ponder:
