Getting Ready To Get Back On The Road

The time has come to tend to Elvira and prepare her again for the road. For all too long she has just been sitting there quietly but you get the sense she is getting restless. She wants to once again roam the open road. No problem. I’m going to get her ready to go starting today.

I have a checklist the length of my arm of things that need to be tended to before we go. Then there is the packing list which is also a mile long. I’m taking it one day at a time.

So, the first item on the list was the power locks for the back slides. Newmar has a system of power paddle locks that are designed to open when the slide is in thereby holding the slide tight against the inner wall. Of course the opposite is also true. When the slide begins to move out they tuck into a pocket where they are supposed to stay when the slide is out. Problem being, they were deploying once the slide was out making it impossible to bring the slide back in. A bit of trouble shooting was called for. In due time I was able to find and resolve the issue. At least for now. In subsequent years Newmar changed to a manual lock system which eliminates the power lock issues altogether.

Next item on the list was a check of the mounting bolts for the back slide motors. There is a known issue with the mounting bolts loosening up over time. Therefore, a systematic and regular check of all mounting bolts is called for again and again. So, the black slides have been tended to. Tomorrow I’ll move to the front slides.

There are, of course, many, many more systems to check out. However, once I’m finished with the slides I’ll take Elvira out for a brief ride. Then, when home I’ll take a fluid sample of the transmission, oil, and coolant and send it off for analysis. That way I’ll know if I have to change any of the three before we get on the road.

I’m also working on our summer route which is by and large finished. Of course, I’ll be tweaking it up until the minute we leave. We’re unsure right now of our actual departure date due to Ms. Barbara’s surgery being rescheduled. But, it will probably be either the first or second week of April. Time will tell.

That, as of now, is where we’re at on The Road Of Retirement. The excitement is beginning to build. Yes, I know April is still a bit away. But no time like the present to begin to prepare. Our departure date will be here before you know it. Yipee! We’re both looking forward to this trip with eager excitement.

Thanks again for stopping by today  We always appreciate your company, and your comments and suggestions. Keep safe, keep healthy, live to the fullest the days that God gives you.

Our continuing mission remains the same: to explore as many new states as possible, to seek out new acquaintances and make new friends, to boldly go where we have not been before

  1. Well, if we can’t be traveling right now, at least we can be getting ready to travel! That is exciting, too. In a few days, I’ll be trying for reservations at Grand Teton NP. Once those are in place, I’ll be working on reservations to and from. And you are right. The next couple months will go by quickly, and we’ll be back on the road before we know it. The time to prepare is now. Good luck with all of Elvira’s tasks. Hope you have a great day!
