Travel Day – Go West Young Man, Go West

Not much to pack this morning so we just sort of eased into the day.  This has been another terrific stop for us.  Our host was fantastic.  The space provided was an absolute gem.  Add to all of this the one factor that sent it over the top, time with my son Paul and his wife Brittany.

Time now to begin the push west.  Time to let our wheels take us to states and places we have never been before.  True to form after our pit stop we were on the road by 10 am.  We decided this time to take the turnpike through Ohio and Indiana.  If only I had known what was in store for us.  The road is a joke.  I’m surprised that we are still in one piece.  The trip reminded me of the bumper sticker I once saw on an older RV – Honk if you see parts falling off.  To top it all off they actually charge you for the privilege of driving on this road and tearing your rig apart.  Enough said.

Traffic was light, there was no construction nor accidents to slow us down so the trip was a quick one.  In due time we were at the entrance of our new home.

Turning in we immediately saw the office in front of us.

I looked to the right

IMG_0062

I looked to the left and then thought to myself, How sweet, lots of green, lots of shade trees.

IMG_0061

Barbara came out of the office and said Follow me!  We were off to our new home.  Past all that green, past all those beautiful trees, back, back, back to the back of the park and the construction zone where they are putting in a number of new sites.

IMG_0069

OK, its got some green, but no shade trees, and minimal site separation.  It’s going to be OK.

IMG_0066

Here is our new home.  Not all that bad.  The sun goes across the back and sets on the drivers side so the sun is not on the refrigerator.  It is hard packed gravel, dead level, and all utilities are convenient to the wet bay.  Gertrude (set up in the back) is the happiest of all since she has a clear view again of the southern sky.  We’ll be here until Sunday afternoon.

IMG_0063

Sunday afternoon we move over to Geber Collision and Glass.  They want to start on repairing the windshield frame 8 am Monday morning.  Once again they assured us that they would be done by late afternoon and we would be able to spend the night in our own home.  Tuesday they will do one last check of their work and then we’ll be off again.

That was our day on The Road of Retirement.  I’ve already crawled under most of the cabinets to make sure all the plumbing is still intact.  All the pictures are still on the walls.  Except one, our sign over the front door came crashing down.  I’ve checked underneath Graybeard to make sure everything is still there.  Tugged on the mirrors to ensure that they were still holding strong.  Verified that all of the awnings are still in their respective places on each side.  I just hope I haven’t forgotten anything.  Time will tell.

Time now to get some shut eye since we have to be up and on the road at the crack of dawn for some planned sightseeing.

Thanks again for coming along with us we sure enjoy your company and comments.  Till tomorrow.

These are the voyages of  Graybeard and it’s two human soul mates.  Our continuing mission: to explore as many new states as possible, to seek out new acquaintances and make new friends, to boldly go where we have not been before

See you on down the road!

Armstrong Air and Space Museum

Talk about a disorganized pair.  That was us today.  We were up early because we were going to visit my son Paul and his wife Brittany.  Then the four of us were going sightseeing.  Maybe it was the early hour.  Maybe we’re getting old (nah, not really!)  Whatever.  We left our home right on time only to get two miles down the road when I realized, somehow, I had walked out without the camera.  Back home we went.  Camera in hand we left again.

Wait, it get’s better!  Low on gas we rolled into the first available gas station which was about ten miles from home.  That’s when I heard Barbara say I can’t find my pocketbook.  It of course contained all our credit cards.  Now what?  Thankfully, we had our laundry quarters in the back which would give us enough gas for the time being.  Guess what?  Right after we used them Barbara said Guess what I found on the floor halfway under my seat?  Yep, her pocketbook!

I guess that’s what happens when you only drink decaf coffee in the morning!

That behind us we resumed our journey and finally arrived at Paul’s house just a wee bit late.  Sightseeing time.  But first another stop so Paul could get gas for his car and the four of us could get breakfast.

With all of that behind us we were off.  A short time later we arrived at our destination.

Paul had suggested this when he heard we were going to be in the area and I’m so glad that he did.  Another fantastic museum to visit with new things to be discovered and learned.

Let’s go exploring time is awasting.

This is Paul and Brittany just outside the entrance to the museum.

IMG_0036

Here they are with the young teenager Armstrong.

IMG_0021

This is the walkway leading to the museum entrance.  Yup, that’s Barbara leading the charge.

IMG_9869

Just prior to entering there is a plaque explaining the purpose of the museum.

IMG_9873

Further information regarding the purpose of the museum and how it came to be was just inside the door.

IMG_9880

As you enter the museum on the one wall is the Hall of Fame, a list of all astronauts from the state of Ohio and their space achievements.  A rather impressive list for sure.

IMG_9876

Perhaps the state’s most famous and the museum’s honored astronaut.

IMG_9877

Let’s take a closer look at his life and achievements.

Here is a picture of him at the age of three.  To the left is a picture of his grandparents farm in Wapakoneta  where his parents raised him.

IMG_9888

Here he is at the age of six making his first flight with his father.

A young boy with a very real interest in aviation.  Come on now, getting your pilot’s license before your driver’s license.

IMG_9892

This is the plane that he learned to fly in.

IMG_9947

He would go on to earn an aeronautical engineering degree from Prudue University, went to work at NASA’s Lewis Laboratory in Cleveland, and became a top test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base.

Outside on display was the Skylancer.

IMG_0038

Seeking additional astronauts, NASA changed it’s selection criteria by lowering the age limit to 35 and raising the height limit to six feet.  In 1962 Armstrong became one of the first two civilians chosen in the second group of astronauts.

IMG_9935

We all know of Armstrong’s achievements regarding Apolo 11.  He was the first man to walk on the moon.  Before that famous day, though, there were his achievements in the Gemini program.

The goals of the Gemini program were quite simple.

IMG_9911

Armstrong was chosen as the commander of Gemini VIII.  He would be the first astronaut to dock his Gemini capsule with a target vehicle in space.  However, it turned out to be one wild ride.

The Gemini VIII capsule.

IMG_9912

IMG_9909

Take a close look now at the inside and think about this – everything, yes everything they did had to be done in the seated position in the capsule.  Forget about any privacy!  Moreover, sometimes the astronauts where in these capsules for up to two weeks at a time.  And I thought that a 36 ft RV was small!

By the end of the tenth Gemini mission NASA was ready with the Apollo program.

IMG_9939

When the time came for the Apollo 11 mission Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins were the next astronauts in rotation so it would be their mission.  Armstrong was chosen as the commander of the mission.

IMG_9959

Since in a past blog we’ve already covered the Apollo 11 mission no need to do it again.  Let me, though, share with you a few new things I discovered today.

IMG_9970

Yes, Apollo 13 is missing because it’s mission had to be aborted.

Tools that were used to collect samples from the moon’s surface.

Speaking of samples, did you know that when the Apollo 11 Astronauts returned and were being held in quarantine they were asked to fill out a customs form?  This historic customs form is signed by all three Apollo 11 astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. They declared their cargo of moon rocks and moon dust, and listed their travel route as starting at Cape Kennedy (now Cape Canaveral) in Florida with a stopover on the moon. The customs form was filed at the Honolulu Airport in Hawaii on July 24, 1969.

Apollo 15 was the first extended exploration mission and the first time the lunar rover was used.

IMG_9981

Apollo 17 was the first mission to use duct tape on the moon – to repair a broken fender on the lunar rover!

IMG_9983

Moving on, on the way to the exit there was an art exhibit with some really beautiful and meaningful works.  Take a look

IMG_9878

IMG_9993

Leaving the museum there was one more exhibit to view.

IMG_0024

IMG_0023

The Gemini capsule was open so one could climb in.  Of course Paul and I tried it first.  Talk about tight quarters – I would not want to spend two weeks, nor a day sitting in a seat like this!

IMG_0026

Paul and Brittany were next.

IMG_0027

There was also a monument to those who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of space exploration:  Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia

IMG_0022 That was our day at the museum.  But the day wasn’t over just yet.  We had to have lunch.  Paul had a great place in mind and so this is where we went.

IMG_0041

Talk about a colorful place.  This is a picture of a bullet hole in the ceiling.  Seems two guys got in a fight over a woman, words turned to bullets.  The outcome?  No one can seem to remember!

Yes, the food was delicious.  Three of us became members of the clean plate club.  One left some of her lunch for me to sample tomorrow.  I would go back here in a heartbeat.

That was our day on The Road of Retirement.  A fantastic day spent with Paul and Brittany.  I’m so very glad we had this time together.  It was also a day of new discoveries and new things learned.  Taken all together it was a banner day.  Really, when you come right down to it what’s more important than time with family.  Thank you Lord for this day full of precious memories.

Thank you one and all for coming along with us.  We always enjoy your company and your comments.  Have a good night, catch you tomorrow.

Travel Day

My Son Paul Joined Us For Supper

Today was another travel day.  We were on our way back to where we had started two weeks ago – the state of Ohio.

Travel wise it was not a good day.  The roads were the absolute pits.  There were potholes, tar strips, broken concrete and so much more.  It all added up to a really rough ride, especially when you are piloting what is no more than a glorified UPS truck.  Then add to it the fact that there were gusty side winds continually from start to finish.  The end of the trip was also quite interesting since Tom’s place is literally in the middle of nowhere.  The final road to get here is not even wide enough for two vehicles.  Yet, this gentleman has a steady stream of 45 foot rigs coming here to stay.

Once here it is easy to understand why they come. This is a gem of an overnight stop.  This is the driveway in, wide and easy to navigate.

This is the side yard, also used for parking RV’s.

This is Tom’s garage and living area.  Behind door number one on the left is his 45 foot restored American Eagle Bus.  Behind door number two on the right is his apartment.

IMG_9853

Here we are, hard packed gravel, dead level, 50 amp electric and water.  Point of fact there are five 50 amp electric boxes.  I parked in such a way that I can keep the sun off the refrigerator during the heat of the day.  This is our home for the next three days.  It is a very quiet and peaceful place but absolutely removed from any hint of civilization!

IMG_9854

IMG_9856

Tonight we had company.  My son, Paul came up from Findlay to join us for supper.  Unfortunately his wife, Brittany, had to work and could not make it.  We missed her.  Barbara gave him his choice of a meal and he chose zita and meat balls.  She also baked a chocolate cake for dessert.  We all did justice to this meal that’s for sure.

IMG_9865

Actually, we had two guests this evening, Paul brought his dog Sassy for a visit.  What a terrific dog, well mannered, inquisitive and so quiet.  It was a treat to have both of them with us for the early part of the evening.

IMG_9863

Tomorrow we’re going down to meet Paul and then we’ll be off to the Neil Armstrong Museum.

That was our day on The Road of Retirement.  A rough travel day that ended in an absolutely wonderful way since we were able to spend time with my son, Paul.  Thank you Lord for safe travel and for our evening together with Paul.

Thanks again for joining us on our journey.  We always appreciate your company and comments.  Catch you again tomorrow.

Till We Meet Again – Family Time

Travel Day

Last night we got together as a family – my sister and her husband, mom, and Barbara and myself.  A farewell dinner before we hit the road.  Since I forgot my camera I grabbed some pictures from the web of the restaurant we went to.  It is the Log Cabin in Wellsboro.  What a fantastic place and what a delicious meal.  Thanks sis.

I’ve learned never to say goodbye anymore but rather till we meet again.  It was, indeed, a bitter sweet moment.  On one hand there was a definite tinge of sadness in my heart since we probably will not see one another for one to two years.  On the other hand for Barbara and myself there was also a sense of anticipation since we were going back on the road to discover and see new places and people.  That’s the ying and yang of full time RV life.

Yes, we’re back on the road again.  We packed up this morning and disconnected from the mother ship with a light rain falling.  We understand we missed the worse of it since a short time after we left the heavens opened up.

What a funny route today.  We went north to New York, then west back into Pennsylvania.  I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll ever get to drive on a flat, level road again.  Once again we were climbing the mountains.  Barbara saw a sign at one point that said Highest Elevation 2080 feet.  I believe it.  Yet, Graybeard still managed a respectable 6.2 mpg.

We were headed to the first of our two boondocking stops, this one at the Presque Isle Downs Casino parking lot (new spot on the map link).

Image result for presque isle downs erie pa

The lot here is huge, mostly empty and quite peaceful.  There is some road nose but I’ve learned to sleep through just abut anything.  It is also easy to access from Route 90.  So it is a winner all the way around.  Especially since parking here is free!

Here we are, home for the night.  Shades in the front windows to keep out the heat.  We’re level enough to run our fridge without an issue.  There is a beautiful breezed blowing across the parking lot.

Casino Eire PA

The only issue right now is that there is a major fire somewhere upwind of the parking lot and we are covered with a blanket of thick smoke.  Hopefully, it will be out shortly.  We heard fire engines about 30 minutes ago so I’m sure things will clear up in a little bit.

That was our day on The Road of Retirement.  We’re excited about what new and wonderful places and people are waiting for us around the next corner.  It feels good to be back on the road and letting the wheels roll.  Someone asked How long do you want to keep this up?  I’d love to do it till I’m 85!  But I’m not going to look that far down the road, rather I’ll just take it day by day.    And I’ll give thanks to the good Lord for each and every day that he gives us.

Thanks for joining us again today.  We always enjoy your company and comments.  Catch you tomorrow sometime.
