December 31st, Monday – Where Has 2018 Gone?

My oh my where has 2018 gone.  It was October of 2017 that we moved into Graybeard full time.  We sold our house divesting ourselves of some 20 years of accumulated artifacts and treasures.  Some stuff was sold, some was donated, a lot of it went to our kids.  At times it was heartbreaking and the source of a good deal of friction between Barbara and myself.  Yet we did what we had to do and have since learned that stuff is not what really makes one happy.

In November I had my left knee replaced.  While I was snug as a bug in a nice warm hospital for the first part of November, Barbara was enduring perhaps the coldest winter on record in New Jersey in Graybeard.  I would soon join her and together we discovered that winter and an RV are a poor mix.  We layered the clothes on.  We piled the blankets on the bed at night.  We went through tank after tank of propane running the furnace and trying to keep everything from freezing up.  Right then and there we vowed never again – we would always spend the winter months from then on where there would be no freezing temperatures and no snow.

The end of December we were on the road headed to New Bern, North Carolina and what we thought from past experience would be warmer weather.  First, we had to get across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.  Christmas Eve we spent shivering and trying to keep warm in the parking lot of the visitor’s center.  At dawn’s early light we pulled out and when to the toll booth only to be told due to high winds we would not be allowed to cross.  Eventually, they opened the bridge and we were on our way.  Mind you this is the first time, the very first time I had every driven Graybeard for any length of time.  Cross winds terrified me.  Narrow lanes the likes of which were in both tunnels made me turn white.  Clutching the steering wheel, my knuckles as white as could be across we went.  Today, many, many more miles under my belt I laugh when I think of that day.  No, I wasn’t laughing then!  As for that warmer weather in New Bern?  They had their first major snow storm of all time in January of 2018!  Go figure.

Throughout the year there would be many more memorable experiences.  There were campgrounds or should I call them resorts that were memorable for many reasons.  The one in Virginia were once I got Graybeard leveled the front wheels were 6 inches off the ground!  The park in Maine where you awoke each morning to a dazzling sunrise on the bay seen through the front windshield.  The park in New York where I almost lost the patio awning due to a gust of wind.  The park in Vermont that looked like someone had forgotten to build the last half of it.  This was also the park where we witnessed the most spectacular fourth of July fireworks we had ever seen before.  Put on by the campground owners it lasted for over 45 minutes and would give the Macy’s fireworks a run for their money.  Who can forget Schoodic Woods in Winter Harbor, Maine.  That was where I walked outside the one night and realized how many stars there are in the nighttime sky.   And the list goes on. There are some that I would one day love return to again.

Then there were the people we met along the way some of whom we still keep in touch with today.  There is Hogie and Max who we met over a dead battery.  Dennis and Pam who befriended us when we first arrived in Sumter Oaks. Of course, there were also those who wanted us jailed for infringing on their campground space!  People just too numerous to mention all who have come in and out of our lives and enriched our lives immeasurably.  Along the way they have taught us that life is not really about what you have or what you get but it is really all about personal relationships.

As for experiences we’ve had and the sights we’ve seen.  It’s hard to know where to start.  We had the delightful experience of seeing history come alive.   We’ve visited places like New Hope Cemetery with its intricate statues and headstones for instance of a husband and wife in bed for the night that has to be visited to be believed.  We’ve cruised across Bar Harbor.  Been as far east as one can get in the United States.  We chased some really weird granite statues on The Maine Sculpture Tour: An outdoor exhibit of 34 sculptures spanning over 273 miles along the coastal region of Downeast Maine.  We got drenched on the Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls.  The Antique Boat Museum was another special stop.  So were the Cole Land Transportation Museum and the Seal Cove Auto Museum.  I know I’m forgetting so many more.

Halfway through the year I adopted a new philosophy of life.  I entered our first year with the thought ringing in my head things are going to happen, things are going to go wrong.  After all you’re living in an RV.  So, I was living always waiting for the other shoe to drop.  Forget that.  I now live with no such expectation.  I simply take it day by day and when and if things go wrong then I deal with them.  Life is so much more enjoyable this way.  When things go wrong, well we’ve always been able to find someone who can help us when and if necessary.  Oh yes, the good Lord has been our ever present but unseen copilot for this past year.

As of now I’ve finally had my right knee replaced and I’m getting back to full mobility.  I’m looking forward to my first hike.  Maybe in the future getting a bike.  Sure would like a kayak.  Time will tell.  I’m just grateful to be able to finally be able to walk in a normal fashion.  Walking, something we probably take too much for granted until we can’t.

Where are we now?  For us the glass remains half full.  We look forward to a new year with eager expectation. In a few weeks we become workcampers for the first time.  Yup, back to work for a short period of time.  After that so many new places we plan to visit.  A new winter home in the state of Arizona. Getting there is we are sure is going to be half the fun.  After all the journey is as much a wonderful part of this life as is the destination.

How about you? What do you have planned for the coming year? Whatever it is, I hope it includes lots of joy, love, and fun. Happy New Year to all of you.

December 30th, Sunday -We’re Both Under the Weather

Not much new happening in these parts.  Since coming back from our Christmas visit both of us have been under the weather.  Barbara has it the worse with no relief in sight.

I’m so-so, mornings and evenings are bad but during the day I can manage to muddle along.  Ah well into every life a little rain must fall.

Still in all I’ve managed to finish some regular monthly maintenance projects.  Others are still on the back burner.  The list of things put off is getting longer and longer.  Going to have to get back on my horse right soon or things might start falling apart.  Come the New Year I’ve promised myself I will be all better and fit as a fiddle.  Yup, I’m trying the power of positive thinking.  Let’s see how that works out!

Did we make church today?  Sadly we did not.  We both we’re up, showered and ready to go but just could not bring ourselves to go.  Between sneezing and coughing and shivering it was obvious that we were not really up for it.  Besides which, neither of us thought it would be fair to unleash whatever we have on everyone else.  Hopefully, next week.

OK, enough for now.  It’s only 8 pm but for some reason I can’t seem to keep my eyes open any longer.  Therefore, I will bid all a good night and says thanks for checking in on us again.  Now, before I go as always a thought for each of us to think up:

As always,  if you are coming to the end of your day with concerns and worries, let me suggest that you turn them over to God.  After all, He is going to be up all night so why not let him handle them for you.

Time now for our evening prayers and eventually some shut-eye.  Till tomorrow.

December 28th, Friday – More Traffic Than One Could Imagine; Up Against the Wall

Could it be?  I mean really?  Was the clock actually right?  7:30 am?  Meaning I actually slept through the night.  Amazing.  No time to waste, however, we had a PT appointment at 9 am, which was an hour away in Ocala.  So we were up and at it.  Still takes me a few minutes to get dressed.  Those pesky socks are still a thorn in my side.  In due time we were out the door and on our way.  Did we make it?  Four minutes late which was not bad.

As for PT, I’ve hit the wall as they say.   Up until now progress came relatively easy.  No more.  I’d say I’m 50% of the way to full mobility but the last 50% is going to be a slow, painful go.  At PT they’re not pulling any punches because they know, as I do, that if they don’t force things then I’ll never be normal again.  Heel slides, squats, the bicycle, leg lifts are more painful than ever.  Yes, I know the saying no pain no gain.  So I’m gritting my teeth, taking the pain pills only when absolutely necessary and pushing through.  In time I know I’ll be able to look back on all of this and smile.  I hope!

One appointment finished, one more to go.  No sweat, down I75 to Brooksville, no more than an hour’s ride and we would be there.  NOT.  We managed to get about 2 miles down I75 and everything came to a halt.  Accident 15 miles ahead. It was clear we were not going to make the second appointment.  Change of plans.  Let’s go pick up Little Graybeard.  In the end it took us over 3 hours to cover no more than twenty miles.  That’s using back roads when we were finally able to do so.  I’m so glad we have nowhere to go the next couple of days.

Home again we packed up the last package to go to the Post Office and took care of that.  We also did a bit of shopping since the freezer and storage cabinets were absolutely bare.  We now have some food in the house for the next several days.  Works for me.

That was our day on the Road of Retirement.  Not really exciting just taking care of business.  We’re both looking forward to just kicking back the next couple of days.  There is housekeeping and maintenance to attend to.  A couple of projects to begin.  More projects to get estimates for.  Nothing pressing so we are under no time constraints.  I like it like that.

Thanks for joining us again on our daily journey.  We always enjoy your company.  I’m going to wrap things up now but before I go a thought for each of us to ponder:

December 27th, Thursday – A White Christmas; Only In An RV; Little Graybeard throws another Hissy Fit

Oh yes a white Christmas.  The best kind one can have.  Outside the window.  Me inside

White Christmas 1

all snug and warm.  Best part, it can all be left behind in time. How did we pull this off? We spent this Christmas at my sister’s in Wellsboro, PA.  Ever the gracious host my sister opened her home to the family and so as many of us as could gather there for the Christmas Holiday.

My mom of course now lives in Wellsboro.  Barbara and I flew in from Florida.  Other members of the family drove from West Virginia and Maryland.  My mom of course had no idea that Barbara and I would be there.  We led her to believe that with my knee surgery being on Dec. 10th there would be no way that I would be fit to travel.  Ah, what a wonderful surprise.  When she saw us she grabbed Barbara in a big bear hug and I thought she would never let her go.  Then it was my turn.  All in all it was really great to be together as a family.  Here are some pictures of our holiday: the Christmas tree with a few of the early presents.  The pile would grow on Christmas eve.

The kitchen island always full of delicious food prepared by my sister.  Trust me, we never lacked for an endless variety of tasty dishes.

Of course there were presents to open.  Imagine getting all worked up over a saddle blanket.  But then again, if you love horses as much as Tori does it sure is possible.  In the background is Amanda’s husband, Charles with the festive hat on.

Jarrett also had his share of presents to open.  That’s his mom Alison off to his side with a puzzled look about what I have no idea!

Bottom line, it was a fantastic way to spend the Christmas holiday.  After all what can be better than time with family and friends.  Add to that the fantastic food my sister prepared.  Every day there was something new, delicious and tasty.  Time now to begin the new year diet.  Yea, sure I don’t think it is really going to happen.  This was in all ways one very special Christmas holiday.

Now, as to flying.  I hope I never have to do it again.  If I can’t get there in the future with Graybeard please count me out.  Ok, the flight out wasn’t so bad.  Except for the early morning departure.  Like 6:40 am meaning we had to leave for the airport at 2:30 am.  Yikes!  Way too early for those on the road of retirement.  Regarding the flight back.  In the seat behind me was an infant that started crying as soon he boarded with his parents and he never stopped until we landed 2 hours later.  I can understand a few minutes here and there but nonstop for 2 hours just put my nerves on edge.  In the future it’s travel by RV or no travel at all.  I hope.

Once home we settled in to what we hoped would be a normal routine.  Not to be.  On the way to physical therapy today Little Graybeard decided to throw another hissy fit.  In the midst of rush hour traffic on Route 75 the car went belly up.  Overheated.  Once again thought the good Lord stepped in.  We discovered George Nahas Chevrolet just 5 miles

away who would be able to take it in if we could get it there.  They also knew of a local towing service, Spencers Towing,  that should be able to help us.  That they did.  Within

an hour the car was on the flatbed and on the way to the dealership.  What to do for a car in the interim?  Not one of the major rental car agencies had a car available.  Guess what?  When we got to the dealership they had one, just one, the last one, a loaner car available.  Now how lucky can one get?  An hour later they called and let us know what had gone wrong.  The electric fan and all of its components had failed.  How much?  Too much.  $700 for parts and labors.  It is what it is.  Yet, the amazing thing for us is, once again when in need, doors opened and problems were resolved.  Thanks God.

All in all the days past, even today, have been great ones on The Road of Retirement.  Sure, our wallet is a bit lighter but things are being taken care of in a timely fashion.  We could have been left stranded but once again we were not,  So we continue to travel along, hand in hand, singing our song giving thanks for the blessings that are ours.

Thanks for joining us today.  We hope you had a great Christmas holiday and that today as well was a great one for you.  Time now to wrap things up but before I go a thought for each of us to consider and ponder:
