We Tried, We Really Tried To Go Sightseeing

More Family Time

Well, never did get to the blog last night since we had company for supper. Our son, Adam, who is on the midnight shift this week stopped over for supper. Guess what we had for supper?

Of course, chicken cutlets! Our two kids request these ever time they come for a meal. Can you guess what also went home with him after his visit? Yup, the left over chicken cutlets! I believe I’m going to go join him for supper in the near future so I can have a few of those left overs. All in all it was great having him over for supper and spending some time with him again. Amanda’s turn today. Yup, the grand dogs are coming too! Time to pick up all the rugs.

This is our weather today and it looks like for the next several days. At least we’re warm and comfortable and dry inside. But, I would really like to get outside and get some work done. I wanted to clean all the lockers, take care of the water softener and a couple of other items but for the foreseeable future it is not to be.

Yesterday, we decided to go sightseeing. Once again, though, it was not to be. Due to COVID everything is still locked up tight. I can’t help but wonder if this pandemic had been properly handled in the beginning how much better off we would be at this point in time. No doubt a whole lot of lives, at the very least, could have been saved. How unfortunate.

Yet, give me a computer and a mouse and the internet and I can discover quite a bit.

For instance, our intent was to visit the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O)Canal Museum and the canal itself. Of course the Museum was closed.

Yet, this is what I discovered after doing a bit of internet research: The C&O was one of a network of canals built during the 18th and 19th century to form water highways for commercial traffic. The C&O is 184.5 miles long and parallels the unnavigable Potomac River. It links Washington D.C and Cumberland, Maryland. It operated for over 100 years and was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the canal to market. However, in the end it could not compete with Baltimore and Ohio railroad which ran parallel to the canal. In 1924 the canal ceased operation.

In the 1950’s there were plans to bulldoze the canal to make way for a super highway through Maryland. However, thanks to Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas the canal was saved and eventually, with the committed work of many others, became a National Park in 1974.

The canal today. On the left are the old railroad tracks. On the right is the original tow path. When the park was open it was possible to take a launch boat tour on the canal.

This is the original rail lift bridge. When down, it enabled cars of coal to cross over the canal. It was then lifted to allow boats to move along the canal. When the canal ceased operation it was left in the down position. In 2016 it was lifted for the last and final time and left in the up position. There is now, as you can, stairs and a walkway built on the old rail bed that allow one to cross back and forth from the visitor center to the tow path.

Cushway’s Coal and Brick. This warehouse played a significant role in the development of both Williamsport and the C&O Canal. This warehouse was the principle site dealing in the retail and wholesale business of coal, iron, flour, cement and plaster for more than 100 years. In front of it is what is known as the turning basin. Coal would have been swept from the upper loading door of the warehouse into waiting canal boats waiting to make their way up and down the canal.

The Conococheague Aqueduct. Aqueduct’s are water bridges that allow the canal to pass over creeks that pass into the Potomac River. The Conococheague Aqueduct was built from 1833 to 1835 in order to span the The Conococheague Creek. The Conococheague Aqueduct consisted of three equal 60 foot spans and it extended196 feet from one side to the other. In April, 1920 a canal boat broke through the upstream wall of the aqueduct and fell into the creek below. Repairs were made and it continued in operation from them until the canal was closed. Since no attention was paid to it after then it continued to deteriorate and was soon considered unsafe for use. In 2017 a project was begun to restore it which was completed in 2019. Canal boats can now safely cross over it once again.

I did find one plaque along the tow path that described what life would have been like on the canal.

So, that was our Thursday. Sure wish we could have gotten into the museum but such is life. It was still a great day out. Maybe, when we come back here in June it will be open.

The day, however, wasn’t over. Keeping in the nautical theme.

I, for one, have a real soft spot in my heart for this fast food restaurant.

Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait as long as this guy for our food!

I had the salmon and shrimp. Delish!

Ms. Barbara is not a fan of fish so she had the chicken platter. She gave it two thumbs up.

That was our Thursday on The Road of Retirement. We had a great day out and enjoyed our time together as always. Supper was even better because our son, Adam, was here. Today, Amada and the grand dogs are now here so this also should be an interesting day in so many ways! We are truly two of the most blessed and fortunate people in the world.

Thanks for taking the time to read our blog.  We always appreciate your company, your comments, and your suggestions. Keep safe, keep healthy, live to the fullest the days that God gives you.

And The Rains Came Down

Time to Clean

Laying Low

I finally had, for the first time since we’ve been here, a full night’s sleep last night. Don’t know what’s been happening in the past but it felt good to sleep through the night. Maybe I can do a repeat tonight?

Yup, the rains came down. It came and went throughout the day only letting up around 4 pm. Cancel any outside work today. Maybe tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that. No need to rush into these things when one is retired.

But no idle hands today.

I cleaned the whole dash area. It was definitely in need of it.

I vacuumed all the rugs, then I picked them up and steamed cleaned the entire floor. Ms. Barbara and I worked together and scrubbed all our counter tops.

The I decided to just kick back and recoup from all the activities of the past few days.

I’ve read this book before and it was a great one so I decided to read it again.

What would a rainy day be like without a few hours of Mexican Train. You’d be amazed at how fast the day passes when you get involved in this game.

Ms. Barbara made a delicious mid-day meal of roasted turkey breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, mixed vegetables, and cranberries. Take it from me my sweetheart knows how to whip up a tasty meal. So much so that if I’m not careful I end up over eating.

That was our day on The Road of Retirement. Quite truthfully, we both needed a day to just do nothing and relax. Ok, we did do a few chores but nothing major. It felt good to just sit back and read a book, watch a few Hallmark Mystery movies, and play some dominos. I guess we’re not as young as we both believe we are! Ah, but the joy of seeing and being with family these last few days makes all the aches and pains well worth it.

Gone Racing

Today, my son Adam decided that the guys needed a day out. More to the point he decided that it was time that we went go-kart racing. Well, I’m game for almost anything and this sounded like it could be a lot of fun.

My son Adam, flanked on the left by my grandson Jarrett; and, on the right by my grandson, Mikey. It was the three of them against this old man for bragging rights in the world of go-kart racing.

It was a bit of ride to get to the track but in due time we had arrived.

Walking into the lobby I began thinking to myself This looks really interesting.

This was a diagram of the track we would be racing on today.

The actual track.

The karts. They are electric powered and can reach a top speed in the vicinity of 50 mph.

Remember how I was going to teach them a thing or two about racing? Let me just say, driving one of these go-karts is intense. It is not for the faint of heart. Nor, for someone whose knees don’t quite bend as they are supposed to and whose back doesn’t take kindly into folding one’s body in the middle just to get seated in one of these contraptions. Bottom line, I lasted 28 laps then I threw in the towel and decided I would be the official photographer for the day.

Gentleman, start your engines!

Leaving the pits and entering the track. In order, Adam, Jarrett and finally Mikey.

Mikey and Jarrett coming hot into turn one.

Adam is right behind them and would in fact lap them by the next turn.

It was a fun day for one and all.

So that is how we spent today on The Road of Retirement. Tonight, I’m sitting here with an ice bag on my one knee, and a heating pad on my back! Me thinks my age just might be catching up to me tonight. But never mind the aches and pains I wouldn’t trade this day for any other. I had an absolutely wonderful time with my son and grandson’s and that to me is a small price to pay for what I’m feeling tonight. What a wonderful life we lead. Thank you Lord for this fantastic day you gave me.

More Family Time

We had a wonderful time this past weekend with our daughter, Amanda. But the good times were not over yet.

Soon after she left Sunday afternoon our son Adam invited us over to his apartment for Sunday night supper. He informed us he was making tacos which neither of us could resist. Oh my, were they ever good.

But it gets better. Come Monday and he invited us back again. This time he informed us that he was making spaghetti and meatballs. I mean that is one of my all time favorites so I was not about to say no.

To his apartment we went again.

Barbara and I spent the afternoon playing Mexican Train with our grandson, Jarrett. We absolutely enjoyed our time with him. He has really grown up.

Our chef hard at work preparing our meal. It’s really something how the times have changed. Not too long ago his mom was constantly cooking for him. Now, he is cooking for us. And doing a really great job I might add.

He also had a surprise in store for us. He had invited the rest of the family over to join us for supper.

In the very front on the couch, our granddaughter Tori and her husband Ryder. Behind them in the black tee shirt, again, is our grandson Jarrett. Then at the supper table we have in the gray T shirt Mikey, and in the yellow his girl friend, Brie.

Jarrett, Mikey and Brie. In the background, Ms Barbara and our son, Adam.

Tori and that beautiful smile of hers.

Tori’s husband Ryder.

Supper time! What a meal Adam made for everyone. You better believe I was once again a member of the clean plate club!

That was our day on The Road of Retirement. Forget the crummy, rainy weather. Forget the storms that caused havoc all around us. The day, for us, was a real winner. This is why we are here, to spend as much time as possible with family and friends. Today, was just the beginning. We are so grateful for this time together.
