Fort Craig National Historical Site

Old San Miguel Mission, Socorro, New Mexico

Bernardo Waterfowl Management Area

What to do, what to do?  Should we stay put?  Or should we go?  We were going crazy just sitting around.  One can only play so many games of Mexican Train before it too begins to get old.

We decided to go.  Now we needed to know where we were going.  Barbara got busy on the computer, put together a list of places, the download directions into her phone.

Fort Craig - Picture of Fort Craig National Historic Site, Socorro ...

This was supposed to be our first destination.  Well, we got to the road leading to the site and said almost at the same time you have to be kidding, it is down that road?  Suffice to say we abandoned our first quest deciding we didn’t want to chance our car on the road in front of us.  Maybe another day when we are really feeling wild and reckless.

This was our second destination.

The church has a long, rich history, dating back to 1598.   A small church was built on the present site in 1626 when the Church formally recognized the mission. The church was abandoned following the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and fell into ruins. By the early 1800s settlers had returned to the area and rebuilt the church. The church was renamed San Miguel in honor of Saint Michael following an Apache raid on the village when the people who sought refuge in the church were saved as an apparition of a winged man wielding a sword chased the attackers away.

The church building has undergone changes over the years, including a new façade and towers.

and the addition of stained glass windows.

IMG_0137

The main body of the church, which is the part built between 1615 and 1626, now seats about 250 people although many more attended services in the early 1880s when there were no pews and the people either stood or knelt on the floor. In 1853 another wing was built unto the church and this accommodates another 150.

There is a small plaza in the front of the church

containing a cross and three marble monuments.

Not seeing a cemetery in the vicinity I wondered what this one meant.  A bit of research and I came up with this:  There are four sub-floors under the present church under which lie the bodies of some of the prominent residents of the past. Under the Sanctuary lies the bodies of four priests who died while serving the faithful of this historic Church.

Some more pictures from around the mission.

Moving on to our next destination.

IMG_0144

This was a totally new adventure for us.  We were told it contained a three mile vehicle tour loop and several elevated viewing platforms.  Eagerly, we made the turn into the Management area and what did we find?

IMG_0146

We found it locked up tighter than a drum.  Oh phoo.  This is really getting old.

Time to head home.  We decided to drive a bit past the park to see what we could discover.

IMG_0147

How about a brand new bridge to replace an old and aging one.  The funny thing is the road goes nowhere.  That’s right about a mile further down the road it is closed off with a barricade across it.  Think of it, how much do you think the new bridge must have cost?  A new bridge built at a cost of many thousands for a road that is closed with no homes, nothing along its length.

That was our day on The Road of Retirement.  We had a great time just getting out and about.  Hey, one out of three isn’t that bad.  We’ll try again on Monday to see what we can find that is of interest in this area and that is open.  Till then, tomorrow is fireworks in the park.  We’re looking forward to it.

Hope you enjoyed traveling with us.  We always appreciate your company and your comments.  Catch you tomorrow.

These are the voyages of  Elvira and it’s two intrepid travelers.  Our continuing mission: to explore as many new states as possible, to seek out new acquaintances and make new friends, to boldly go where we have never been before.

See you on down the road!

Nothing Shaking Today

Just a short note to say that there is nothing new today.

We were supposed to take a ride over to Pie Town but the stars didn’t line up in the right way so we stayed home.

I finished sanitizing the fresh water system and then drained the fresh water tank.  Tomorrow I’ll fill it again with fresh water only and then drain it one more time.

I spent some more time working on putting together our Tour America 2021.  It seems so far off and so many things are still unknown but one thing I’m finding out is the whole world seems to be going RV’ing.  That is, if the difficulty I’m finding in making reservations at various RV parks is any indication.

So here we are in July.  In one respect the year seemingly has flown by but then again in some respects it seems to be on hold.  We can only guess what the rest of the year will be like.  One thing is for sure, it is not going to be anything like we had originally planned.

That’s it for our day on The Road of Retirement.  Perhaps tomorrow we’ll have something more interesting to share with you.

In closing, my feelings exactly.

Project For The Day – Sanitizing the Water Tank

A Look At Our New Home

Before I left the dental office yesterday the dentist encouraged me to eat lots of soft foods for 24 hours.  He stated ice cream would be a great choice.  I am always one to try and follow doctor’s orders.  So, I even went out and bought a second half gallon so I would not run out!   Now that the 24 hours is up I guess I’ll need to go back to more regular foods.  Oh well it was great while it lasted.

IMG_0093

I have been talking about doing this probably since day one of our ownership of Elvira.  I needed to bleach the onboard water tank and subsequently all the water lines.  This morning before it got to hot I filled the tank with the appropriate bleach solution and let it set for the remainder of the day.  Tonight before I go to bed I’ll pump the solution through the lines and let them set for the night.  Then tomorrow morning when I get up and I’ll flush the entire system.  Finally, I’ll dump what’s left in the water tank and fill it again with fresh water.  That was my project for the day.

Time for some pictures of our new homestead.  When we first pulled in we noted some interesting markers for each site.  Today I took some pictures of them.  Here are a few.

Next, some pictures from inside the office.

Nothing more needs be said!

That was our day on The Road of Retirement.  I feel so much better today now that the tooth ache is gone.  The fact that there is no residual pain is the icing on the cake.  We were told today that the park is planning for a 4th of July celebration.  They’ll be fireworks, a Mexican food truck, and fire engines.  Quite a combination, hey?  We’re looking forward to it.

In closing

God Really Does Take Care of Fools and Old Men Like Me

Late yesterday afternoon it began with a vengeance.  A toothache of epic proportion.  This was beyond all belief.  I’ve been taking care of my teeth religiously.  Especially, after the money I spent on them in Yuma several months back.  So, now what?  Then again, where to go to get it taken care of?

Locations | Aspen Dental

A quick search on the internet and I found Aspen Dental.  They were only 30 minutes away, and I could make an appointment online.  I made an appointment for today at 10 am.

Today we arrived a few minutes early and were warmly greeted by the office manager who was at the front desk.  The first surprise we received was the news that since you have no dental insurance you are entitled to a free comprehensive exam with xrays.  Really?

The exam showed that I had a tooth that had to come out.  Yes, they would take care of it today.  Oh boy I now knew I was in for an interesting day.

Well, the tooth is now out and all I can say is what a fantastic dental clinic we stumbled upon.  The staff in total as well as the dentist are first class all the way.  As for the price – they quoted us one price which we believed was very reasonable – but when the procedure was through they then told us the price quoted was wrong.  The price was actually over a hundred dollars less!  How often do you hear that?

Here’s an added bonus.  Aspen Dental has offices all over this great land of ours.  Meaning, what was done today and entered in their computer system can be accessed by any office anywhere.  Yipee!  The VA could learn a lesson from them.

Well, now we know why we ended up here in the middle of nowhere.  Once again God’s hand was leading us.  Demonstrating once more that God takes care of fools and old men like me.  We both got a chuckle thinking of some of the prior places we recently had called home and we both agreed it would have been hard to find nation-wide dental care in those locations.  Especially, the first class service we received today.  Once again we ended up in the right place at the right time.

Our day on The Road of Retirement has come to a close.  Definitely not the type of day we expected.  Yet a day that proves once again how blessed and fortunate we really are.  Ah yes, tain’t this life grand!

Thanks for hanging in there with us.  We always appreciate your company and your comments.  Catch you tomorrow.
