October 7th, Sunday – It’s Time to Go East Before It’s Too Late; Rematch Mexican Train

So when I turned the news on this morning the big buzz was the hurricane bearing down on the Gulf Coast.  So we quickly made the decision to get out of Dodge so to speak.

Now others including the volunteers who work here seem to feel that whatever happens will be no big deal.  OK, each to their own but we believe it’s better to err on the side of caution.  Especially after what we witnessed in New Bern.  Time will tell if we made the right decision.

So we began packing and putting things in order.  We’ll leave tomorrow and head toward Sumter Oaks in Bushnell.  Tomorrow is supposed to be great for traveling but things are supposed to start going downhill as of Tuesday.  So we’re leaving before we have to travel in the rain and perhaps wind.  As for the weather this week in Bushnell there is supposed to be some rain on Wednesday and Thursday but no heavy winds.

So today I got my Mexican Train rematch.  It went back and forth throughout the whole

game but in the end I had my revenge.   There will be other games in the future and I’m sure Barbara will get me again sooner or later.

So that was the extent of our day.  Some days we seem to be in overdrive on The Road of Retirement while other days we are just sort of idling along.  No complaints from us we take them as them come and enjoy each and every moment we are given.  Thanks for joining us today and we’ll let everyone know when we’re settled and for how long in our new home.

Before I leave you for the night a thought for each of us to ponder:

As always,  if you are coming to the end of your day with concerns and worries, let me suggest that you turn them over to God.  After all, He is going to be up all night so why not let him handle them for you.

Time now for our evening prayers and eventually some shut-eye.  Till tomorrow.

October 6th, Saturday – Mexican Train; New Toys; Uncomfortable Discoveries

So we started today just like the others before it, late.  After all when there is no reason to get up at the crack of dawn then why do it.  So we moved into the day laid back and with no rush to do a thing.  It’s going to seem weird once we start work camping in January and have to follow a schedule.  Time will tell how we handle that.

So today for the first time we were able to sit and play a full game of Mexican Train.  I

would like to say that I came out the winner but truth is Barbara once again got the better of me.  I’m calling for a rematch as soon as possible.  This is one of those games that we both enjoy and can spend hours playing.

So today some new toys came for me.  The first is a new LST Battery Trickle Charger.

I had a Battery Tender but it bit the dust or so it seems.  Trying to get answers from their parent company is liking pulling teeth.  So I decided since their customer service/support is non existent I definitely was not going to buy another one.  Hopefully this one will last longer than a year.

The next new thing is a General Tools MMD4E Moisture Meter which measures the moisture content in a wide variety of materials.  The reason I got it was because I was

suspicious about several areas in Graybeard that I noted from time to time appeared damp.  Unfortunately my suspicious were confirmed.  I have at least two areas, one in the front around the cockpit windows and the other in the bedroom wall adjacent to the slide seal that show a higher than normal moisture content.  Now neither wall feels damp to the touch.  Neither area shows any signs of pealing wallpaper.  Neither wall appears weak or spongy.  Which leaves me wondering what exactly am I dealing with.  Time for some further research.  Right now I’m just glad I sort of know what I am up against.

I also finished up some outside projects on my maintenance list.  Bottom line, I’m feeling really good about getting some necessary monthly maintenance items taken care of.

That then is the extent of our day.  Thanks again for joining us on The Road of Retirement.  As always we had another great day traveling along, hand in hand, singing our song.  Hope you had a great day as well.  Let’s never forget each and every day we are given can never be repeated so always make the most of each one as it comes.  Before I leave as always a thought for each of us to ponder:

October 5th, Friday – I Believe I’ve Turned the Corner, Health Wise; I gained a day

Just another fantastic day in paradise.  Sometimes I believe I need someone to pinch me just to convince me that this wonderful journey is real.  Every day is a day to be treasured as a gift given by God and so we do.  Some are a little rougher around the edges then others, but taken in total they are amazing.

Well, I believe I’ve turned the corner health wise.  And so has Barbara.  I’m able to sit for extended periods of time.  I’m able to sleep comfortably once again.  I can also do some

minor projects.  Barbara, too, has begun to come around.  It’s hard to tell what the story is with her leg but she is still on medication so we believe in time all will be well.  If not, well we know a great medical center that we can return to if we have to.

Tired of sitting around I once again began to tackle some projects that needed attention.  Let’s face it, you just can’t let things go when you’re living full time in an RV.  If you do sooner or later things will bite you but good.  So, this is what I got done today:

  • the door latch was looking a bit weathered so I masked it off and painted it flat black.  Looks much better now.
  • the door latch was also starting to stick so I got out the graphite and lubricated it.
  • cleaned and reorganized the lockers on the passenger side.  Also treated all the seals with 303.  Drivers side tomorrow.
  • treated all the tires with 303 and covered them back up.
  • cleaned the vent screens front and back.  Amazing how fast they collect dirt and lint.
  • lubricated the curtain rack up front as well the slide for the passenger side window
  • gathered all the garbage together and took a walk to the dumpster.  That in itself was a victory since I haven’t been able to walk much lately.
  • finally scrubbed all the bugs off the front of Graybeard, at least where I could reach.  I have to figure out how to get to the area above the windshield.  Step ladder is not high enough.  Any thoughts anyone?

Barbara worked inside on the computer.  Paid bills.  Tried to find a health plan.  Worked some more on FEMA for my mom.  I’m not sure what else she did since I wasn’t looking over her shoulder but she was busy all day.  Along with all that she made some great meals and made sure the dishes were done and the kitchen clean.

About that day gained, all day long I kept thinking it was Saturday.  Don’t know why really but imagine my surprise when Barbara corrected me and let me know it was only Friday.  Now how about that!  A free day, I’ll take it.

The weekend warriors or should I say the weekend campers are coming in one after another.  The promise of a beautiful three day weekend I’m sure has something to do

with it.  It’s fun to watch what comes by the solarium window.  Everything from small pop up’s to forty five foot diesel pushers and all manner of RV rigs in between.  It’s fun watching those with travel trailers maneuver into the various sites.  It’s immediately obvious who has been doing it for some time.  They get their trailers into the tightest sites without breaking a sweat.

So that was our day.  We are beginning to watch the weather real close since there are rumblings about some nasty weather coming into the panhandle of Florida next week.  We’ll continue to monitor the forecasts and be ready to run if we have do.  That, after all is why we have wheels under our home.

Time now to wrap things up.  It’s been a great day and each is getting better.  Thanks once again for joining us on The Road of Retirement.  Sorry we have no new discoveries to post, or spiffy sites of exploration but sometimes it is just like that.  In time we’ll get back to exploration and sight seeing but not for several days yet.  OK, as always a thought for all of us to ponder before I leave:

October 3rd, Wednesday -A Laid Back Kind of Day

I can’t believe it, we slept way late this morning.  What can I say but as I alluded to in an earlier post this is a great place to get some sleep.  Darkness is always all around us and creates an atmosphere that is conducive to just kicking back and taking it easy.  So we did.  And so we shall for the remainder of our time here.

But that’s not to say that nothing was done today.  I’m just tired of sitting and lying around so I decided to get busy.  Nothing drastic but small things that needed attention.  For instance, I installed the hold downs on several of the blinds.  I installed the last mini

blind in the kitchen.  I vacuumed from front to back.  I fired up the generator and ran it under load for several hours.  I also switched the frig’ and the hot water heater over to propane to verify that they worked properly in that mode.  Like I said, nothing drastic but little things here and there.

Oh, how I wish I could ride a bicycle – if that is I had one.  Or that I could canoe or kayak –  if I owned one or the other.  This is the perfect place for all those things.  Trails abound

around here.  The river is known as the perfect place to float on down.  Maybe some day when I’m really feeling up to it.  I think I would start with a bike.  I always enjoyed riding one.

Now, that dear friends is the extent of our day.  Not much of anything.  But slowly getting back to normal.  I just need to realize that it is still going to take time.  What’s the saying, Rome wasn’t built in a day.  Yet, inch by inch anything is a cinch.  So we will push forward taking each day as it comes.  I will continue to give thanks for the small victories that God has given us, and continue to rely on him for the strength needed in the days yet to come.

Going to say goodnight now.  I have my cup of tea and a brownie.  Thanks again for joining us today on The Road of Retirement.  Hope you had a great day and that you were also able to do some things that you really wanted to do.  Before I go let me leave us all with this to ponder:
