So yesterday we headed north.  Barbara had put together a day’s itinerary and was willing to drive, so off we went with me relaxing in the navigator’s seat.  We couldn’t have asked for a better day, bright blue and sunny skies, and reasonable temperatures.

We first went to Shelburne, Vermont and that special place for children of all ages, The Vermont Teddy Bear Company.

Regarding the company’s belief this is what they state:  . . . The Vermont Teddy Bear Company believes that showing how much you care simply and directly can make the world a better place . . .

Then the highlight of our visit, the factory tour

Our guide for this tour was a young man by the name of Jamie.

Regarding the history of the company.  In 1981, John Sortino was playing with his son Graham and his collection of teddy bears. Surprised to see that every one of his son’s bears wore a tag identifying it as foreign made, Sortino was inspired to bring this American tradition back to its roots by handcrafting bears right here.  His first bears, Bearcho, Buffy, Bearazar, and Fuzzy Wuzzy, were made in his wife’s sewing room

and sold mostly to friends. By 1983, Sortino began to sell his bears from a peddler’s cart at an open-air market in Burlington, Vermont. It took four days to sell his first bear and a year to sell his remaining 200. Today the company builds 750 bears a day.  No two bears are exactly alike.

Their busiest time of year is as they state

The company’s tremendous growth started with a simple suggestion by an early customer.  A tourist visiting Burlington wanted a bear, but she wanted it mailed to her home. That gave Sortino the idea to package a teddy bear and add delivery service and other extras to go along with it. The Bear-Gram® concept was born.  Today, the Bear-Gram gift remains constant. Each includes a customized Vermont Teddy Bear dressed to suit a special life event, occasion or holiday, and optional embroidery service. The bear is placed in a colorful gift box complete with air hole and is enclosed with a personalized greeting and candy treat.  The company is the largest seller of teddy bears by mail order and internet

On with the tour.  Our first stop is the cutting room were the pieces are made for the bears.  There is a cutting table were several layers of fur are placed on the table at one

time then a form is placed on the material, and using immense air pressure the pieces are cut. The Teddy Bears’ fur is flame-resistant and machine-washable.

There are a total of 20 pieces needed for each individual bear.

Once the pieces are cut they go next to the sewing room.  This is a picture

of the floor itself.  Here are some pictures of those that were working there the day we visited.  The company employs about 170 year-round workers.  Other temporary workers are hired during the busiest times of the year.

Once the pieces are stitched together they move to the stuffing room.

After each bear is stuffed it is weighed to make sure each has the right amount of stuffing. Cut, stitched, and stuffed, the bears are groomed and then prepared for shipping.

Jamie then explained that there is constant development going on to find the next new bear

Each year bears are made and auctioned off for charity.  This bear raised $7000 for their favorite charity, Burlington’s Make a Wish Foundation, last year.

The tour finished it was time to head to other attractions which we will share with you

tomorrow – those being the Champlain Chocolate Company and Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream.

That was in part our day yesterday.  I wanted so bad to do the blog last night but my back was not going to cooperate.  Hence, it had to be put off to today.  Yes, I’m better, but still have a long way to go.  But, though, at times the pain gets to an awful high level but I’m trying not to complain.  This is the first real bump we’ve hit since we began traveling full-time and I’m not about to let it derail us.  In time, we’ll find a permanent answer to this pesky little problem.

By the way, we found an answer to no TV.  Streaming.  We’ve been on the camp WiFi watching the complete series of The Adventures of Swiss Family Robinson.  Problem is, we’re hooked and can’t stop now until we come to the end – however long that might be!

Time now to say good night.  The rain continues to fall steadily now and night will soon be upon us.  The day has been a good one.  I’ve allowed myself time to rest and, hopefully, begin to heal. I’m sure the process is going to be a long one but even the longest journey begins with just the first small step.  Till tomorrow a closing thought for each of us to ponder:

As always,  if you are coming to the end of your day with concerns and worries, let me suggest that you turn them over to God.  After all, He is going to be up all night so why not let him handle them for you.

Time Out

The weather lately has been absolutely beautiful. Abundant sunshine, clear blue skies and the temperature has been right where you like it to be.

Having said all that, it all adds up to a perfect opportunity for a picnic in the park. Pick a park, any park, we have lots of them all around us.

Yesterday we picked Lake Parker Park which is just about 20 minutes from our house. It is a small but beautiful park with lots of green grass, and plenty of picnic tables. In addition, dogs are welcomed so Proton was able to come with us.

The lake is one of the larger ones in the area. While we were there we saw a number of bass boats speeding across the lake.

There are a number of paved walking trails in the park and we did spend some time walking a smaller trail.

That was yesterday, as for today. . .

We made the trip to Parkesdale Market. There is, for us, only one reason to make the trip here and that is for

the strawberries which are now in season and of course for their

always delicious Strawberry Shortcake.

Oh yes, they plant a lot of strawberries every year.

They have a wonderful covered area for feeding your face.

Though we came for the strawberries, we also had the opportunity to meet Ms. Barbara’s brother Harry and his wife Janet who were on their way home to Fort Myers from Orlando. All in all it was an absolutely delightful afternoon spent filling our faces and spending time with family. The best of all worlds.

Life remains good on The Road of Retirement. Our days are easy with no pressing concerns to trouble us. What more could one ask for. Hope life is good for you as well.

Thanks again for stopping by today  We always appreciate your company, and your comments and suggestions. Keep safe, keep healthy, live to the fullest the days that God gives you.

Our continuing mission remains the same: to explore as many new states as possible, to seek out new acquaintances and make new friends, to boldly go where we have not been before

A Valentine’s Turtle – For Me!

Breakfast finished out I went out to attend to a few odds and ends. I was gone, oh, about 30 minutes I guess.

When I came back in, there sitting in my chair waiting for me was my very own Valentine’s Turtle! I was thrilled. It is totally awesome and I absolutely adore it. My sweetheart got me my perfect Valentine’s gift and I love her for it.

In other news around the homestead . . .

The shutters are finished and back up. Ask me and I believe they really look great. I’m going to go one step further and eventually paint the first slat in each awning the same sage green. I believe that will tie everything together.

I have one other painting project I need to attend to. I need to finish painting the window sills in the front bedroom. I wanted to wait until after they installed the new windows. Since that is now done it is time for me to finish painting what I started earlier.

What will I get into next? No telling. But I believe it is time to start focusing on getting Elvira cleaned up and packed. Our April departure will be here before you know it.

That’s it for now on The Road of Retirement. Today, overall, was an easy day. Which is to say it was my kind of day. As for the temperature, suffice to say it is not destined to stay this cool. The word on the street is we’ll be back in the 80’s by Wednesday.

Thanks again for stopping by today  We always appreciate your company, and your comments and suggestions. Keep safe, keep healthy, live to the fullest the days that God gives you.

A Little of This and A Little of That

Happy Valentine’s Day! OK, I’m a day early but I didn’t want to forget. Yes, I got my sweetheart some flowers for the day. If there is any women more deserving I don’t know who. What she puts up with living with me, flowers are the least I can get her! She’s been at my side through thick and thin, for richer and poorer, around all the twists and turns, and over all the speed bumps for some 38 years. I love her more today than the day we said I do. And each day I try to find new ways to let her how much I love her.

As to what has been going on around the homestead . . .

The great shutter paint off continues. To the left are two pair of shutters with their new coat of green paint, and to the right are two more pair waiting for their color change.

The first two pair painted and already back up. They do make a statement! I like them, but Ms. Barbara is sort of on the fence. I told her give it at least a year and if she still doesn’t like them we’ll sell the house. Not real, I told her I would change the color. Speaking of selling the house, it amazes me that when we first moved in we had all intention of reselling the house this April. Needless to say, that idea has gone out the window. I guess you can say the house has grown on us and we’re really comfortable here. It will make an excellent base from which to venture forth into the great unknown.

This is my son Paul and his wife Brittany. They purchased our original rig when we purchased Elvira. They recently sold their home in Ohio and are now living in the rig on a rented lot right behind our house. Now how about that. They’ll be moving over to our home and driveway once we leave in April and will be here for most of the summer. Since Paul works remotely, living here is not a problem at all.

It’s been great having them here in the neighborhood. We get together for Sunday dinner and sometimes during the week for game night. I can’t think of a better way to spend time then with family.

Life is great on The Road of Retirement. We have so much to be grateful for. We have a wonderful home, we’re getting to spend time with family, and we’re both back to full health. Soon enough we’ll be back on the road again and we’re excited about that. We have been and remain two of the most blessed people on the face of the earth.
